When Huawei introduced the first MateBook X model in early 2017, this laptop attracted attention with its eye-catching design.
In addition to being stylish, it was located in a separate place among Windows laptops with its thinness and lightness. More than three years later, Huawei comes up with a new MateBook X model.
The new model also contains the most important features of the first model. However, there are small touches in the design.
Below you can find our detailed review of the Huawei MateBook X 2020, which is sold at a price of $ 950.

Huawei MateBook X 2020 review: design and features
Huawei MateBook X, as mentioned above, is a laptop that stands out with its design features. The ultra-light and portable computer weighs 1 kg and comes in a 13.6 mm thick body. Huawei calls this laptop “lighter than two large coffees”. In fact, it shows that this laptop is primarily aimed at those who spend most of the day outside and are looking for a laptop that they can easily fit in their bag and take out and use everywhere.
MateBook X is available in two color options, Ice Gray and Forest Green. Forest Green is a little more unusual for a laptop and will appeal to many. However, the Ice Gray color, which is the subject of our review, is also an extremely impressive color. It has a different shade compared to similar colored laptops we’ve seen so far. This helps Huawei’s ultra-thin and light laptop stand out from the crowd.
The port options of the MateBook X, which has a conical profile, are not very wide. On the left edge is the USB-C port, 3.5mm headphone jack and microphone. On the other side, there is another USB-C port. Charging is carried out from both USB-C ports.
Fortunately, Huawei has included an additional adapter called MateDock in the box. There are HDMI, VGA and USB-A ports on this adapter. It also has an additional USB-C port so you can charge the computer while using this port or take advantage of the USB-C connection. We recommend that you do not miss this accessory from the bag you carry the MateBook X.
The 13-inch screen of the Huawei MateBook X is presented with 3: 2 aspect ratio, which we have recently started to see more frequently on laptops and which we find useful. A very thin bezel surrounds the screen. The bezels on the right-left and top edges are 4.4 millimeters thick, while the bezel area under the screen is slightly thicker. Here we see the Huawei logo.
According to Huawei, the screen-to-body ratio is 90 percent, which contributes to MateBook X’s smaller surface area than normal 13-inch laptops.
The keyboard of the MateBook X has the same size keys as we see on the Huawei MateBook 13 models with a 13-inch screen. You make sure you press the keys deep enough, well. Huawei also emphasizes that the keys offer comfortable and convenient typing with a key press range of 1.3 millimeters. You do not feel any pressure in your fingertips either.
In the upper right corner of the lower part of the laptop you will see the power button with the fingerprint reader integrated. This unit offers the speed and stability in the Huawei laptops we reviewed earlier. You can easily bypass the lock screen using your fingerprint through Windows Hello. Moreover, if you have different accounts on the computer, you can define different fingerprints for each account and access them easily.
Huawei MateBook X 2020 review: Hardware, Performance and Battery
We mentioned above that the 13-inch screen of the MateBook X has a thin bezel and a high screen-to-body ratio of 90 percent. Huawei has a 3K FullView display on this laptop. The screen with LTPS technology makes it more convenient to collaborate with wide viewing angles and watch things together with friends. It has a brightness above the average of a laptop with 400 nits. Indeed, the brightness of the screen is satisfactory, allowing comfortable working outside.
The screen, which supports a resolution of 3000 x 2000 pixels, has a pixel density of 278 ppi. The pixels at the optimum distance to the eye are too far to be detected. Sharpness and clarity are fine.
One of the things we like the most about the MateBook X’s screen is that it has a 3: 2 aspect ratio. This aspect ratio, as we said, is more preferred in laptops lately. While 16: 9 is more suited for content consumption, the 3: 2 job provides more usability for those with more productivity-oriented applications. Thus, it is possible to view more content at a glance.
While we say the 3: 2 screen is more suitable for productivity-oriented tasks, it is also suitable for watching videos on Netflix or YouTube.
It will also provide a satisfying visual for those who love to play games. The sound system also completes the screen in this area.
The laptop has four powerful speakers. These four speakers deliver a truly high intensity, full-bodied surround sound output. This audio system will be more than enough for you while listening to music, watching videos or playing games. You won’t need another speaker.
When we look at the components inside, the model we have has a 10th generation Intel Core i5-10210U CPU. 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB of internal memory complement this. The presence of 16 GB of RAM provides a great advantage in multitasking.
It will easily meet the needs of many mainstream users in subjects such as photo editing or video production.
512 GB of internal memory is also sufficient, but Huawei has divided the disk into two directories, as in every laptop. There are Windows files in directory C, directory D is reserved for files.
Our recommendation is to set the D section to install Microsoft Store apps and other traditional Windows programs right from the start.
One of the important features of the MateBook X is that it has Wi-Fi 6 support. Although it is currently in its infancy and the prices of supporting Wi-Fi routers are found to be high, Wi-Fi 6 is a technology that offers faster network connectivity that will be in our lives for the next few years.
MateBook X users are already ready for this technology. In a way, you will have made an investment for the future.
When we come to the battery side, the MateBook X has a 42 Wh capacity lithium-polymer battery. Huawei states that thanks to this battery, the laptop can play 9 hours of video on a single charge.
In addition to 9 hours of 1080p video playback, 9 hours of use in standard workload and 7.5 hours of web browsing are also offered.
Huawei MateBook X 2020 review: software
MateBook X comes with Windows 10 Home installed. As with its other notebooks, Huawei has limited the number of pre-installed applications on this computer as much as possible.
It’s easy to connect your Huawei smartphone to the MateBook X. It is enough to touch your NFC-enabled phone to the computer once.
Huawei changed the area where you put your phone in contact with the MateBook X and moved it to the clickpad section. In other words, a short time after touching your phone to the clickpad, the phone and computer connection is established. Similarly, you can connect the Huawei tablet you have with the laptop in the same way.
One-click backup of photos and videos on your phone is also offered in the PC Manager application. In short, PC Manager will be one of the programs that P40 Pro users will use most.
If you have another branded phone, then you can use the Your Phone application provided by Microsoft. This app will also help bridge the MateBook X with your non-Huawei Android phone.
You can easily install the modern Windows 10 application and game you want on the MateBook X from the Microsoft Store, as well as continue to use traditional Windows desktop applications.
We also see that Microsoft is actively acting on updates. As a result, with the tools offered by both Huawei and Microsoft, MateBook X owners expect an efficient user experience.
Huawei MateBook X 2020 review: conclusion
Huawei MateBook X is a laptop with a stylish design, high quality materials, ultra-thin and light body that will give users a high taste and desire.
Thanks to its lightness and thinness, it can be used easily on the laptop and carried effortlessly in the bag.
The high resolution and 3: 2 aspect ratio screen will help users who continue to produce outside, do their job well.
It easily meets the needs of the targeted user group with its components such as Core i5 processor, 16 GB RAM and 512 GB SSD. The battery life, which can easily take out a working day, also helps.
The ability to easily connect and collaborate with other devices of Huawei is one of the important features that distinguishes this laptop from others.
